From the Washington Post via Greater Greater Washington:
New non-congregate shelter in for people experiencing homelessness opens in West End
The shelter, in a former George Washington University dormitory, is meant for families without children under 18, individuals who were matched to permanent housing but are waiting for the lease process, and people experiencing chronic homelessness. The semi-private, non-congregant setting allows couples and families to stay together, filling a gap in DC’s existing shelter network. The first residents moved in on November 15.
The coverage of course focuses on the procedural and financial steps needed to bring the new shelter into service. But the foundation is that better housing elsewhere was created for students, leaving this building vacant.
